Nigeria army says kills 11 Boko Haram insurgents (Reuters)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Nigeria's army killed 11 suspected Boko Haram insurgents during a gun battle at a checkpoint in the Islamist sect's heartland of Maiduguri on Saturday, the field operations officer in the remote northeastern city said.

Nigerian forces are reeling from a sharp uptick of increasingly sophisticated and coordinated attacks by Boko Haram. Human Rights Watch says it has killed hundreds of people since launching an uprising against the government in 2009, including an attack on the city of Kano that killed 186.

"Eleven BH (Boko Haram) members have been shot dead by the JTF (joint military taskforce) in Maiduguri today, following a shootout with the sect members at a checkpoint in a stop and search operation," field operations officer Colonel Victor Ebhamelehe said told Reuters.

"One member of the sect who was wounded is receiving treatment at the hospital."

Boko Haram began as a clerical movement opposed to western cultural influences in Maiduguri, a dusty town in the northeast region bordering Chad, Niger and Cameroon, on the cusp of the Sahara. It has since spread to much of Nigeria's north and has become the top security threat in Africa's biggest oil producer.

Suspected sect members attacked a police station in Mandwari, in north Nigeria's Kano state, on Friday, police and witnesses said, leading to more than an hour of running gun battles that fatally wounded one policeman.

"We lost one of our men in the attack in Mandwari inside the city. He is a corporal and he died on the way to hospital. The gunmen were repelled," Kano police commissioner Ibrahim Idris told Reuters on Saturday.

In an audio tape posted on the Internet on Thursday, the purported leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, threatened to kill more security personnel and kidnap their families, and accused U.S. President Barack Obama of waging war on Islam, in an apparent effort to strike a chord with global jihadists.

He denied that the group, which is loosely modeled on the Taliban, had been responsible for most of the civilian casualties in last Friday's attack on Kano. Police say most of those casualities were shot dead by sect members.

Blues singer Etta James remembered in Los Angeles (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Hundreds of mourners gathered at a Los Angeles-area church on Saturday to remember rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James, saying she overcame great personal and professional hurdles to sing "the times that she lived."

During a two-hour service that featured performances by pop stars Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera, the Rev. Al Sharpton eulogized James as a woman who rose from a tough childhood and poured her pain into her music.

Aguilera performed a version of "At Last," James' show-stopping hit and best-known song.

James died at 73 at a Riverside, California, hospital on January 20 from complications of leukemia, prompting numerous tributes from artists and musicians who were influenced by her work, including Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin.

"People need to understand that when they hear the music Etta James sang, she sang the times that she lived," Sharpton told friends and family at Greater Bethany Church City of Refuge church in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena.

"She put our pain and our dreams and our love and our need for one another in her vocal chords, but the difference between her and other artists is somehow you felt she meant what she was saying."

James, who was born to a teenage single mother, won wide acclaim and three Grammys, but saw numerous ups-and-downs in her career and personal life. She struggled with obesity and heroin addiction, ran a hot-check scheme and had troubled relationships with men.

But, Sharpton said, James should be remembered for blazing a trail for the entertainers who followed her.

"Etta was the one that brought class ... generations behind will try but never quite have the strut and swagger and talent of Etta James," he said.

"At last you (Etta) can get the gratitude of the savior now. Go on home Etta. Get your reward now ... you beat them Etta. You won Etta. Get your reward Etta. At last. At last. At last."

James won her first Grammy in 1995 for her album, "Mystery Lady: The Songs of Billie Holiday." She also won Grammys in 2003 and 2005, and a lifetime achievement award in 2003 from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Grammys.

James is survived by her husband, Artis Mills, two sons Donto and Sametto who played in James' backing band, and four grandchildren.

Greece, creditors laboriously piece together debt deal (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece and its private creditors head back to the negotiating table on Saturday to put together the final pieces of a long-awaited debt swap agreement needed to avert an unruly default.

After weeks of muddling through round after round of inconclusive talks, the negotiations appear to be in their final phase with both sides hoping to secure a preliminary deal before Monday's summit of euro zone leaders.

The debt swap, in which private creditors are to take a 50 percent cut in the nominal value of their Greek bond holdings in exchange for cash and new bonds, is a pre-requisite for the country to secure a 130-billion-euro rescue package.

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos told Reuters in an interview he expects the debt talks to be concluded within days.

"We made significant progress over the last few weeks and in the last few days in particular. We are trying to conclude the discussions as quickly as possible. I am quite optimistic an agreement will be reached in the coming days," he said.

Still, concern has grown that the deal may not do enough to get the country's debt reduction plan back on track, and that Greece's European partners will be forced to stump up funds to cover the shortfall.

Athens also faces problematic talks with the "troika" of foreign lenders - the European Commission, IMF and European Central Bank - who have warned it needs to do more to drive through painful reforms before they dole out any more money.

"There is a lot of work to be done because at the same time we have the negotiations for the new (bailout) program," a Greek finance ministry official said.

"It's all very dense, difficult and crucial. There is optimism because the country needs to survive and we need to protect its citizens because they have suffered a lot."

Athens and its creditors have broadly agreed that new bonds under the swap would probably have a 30-year maturity and a progressive interest rate. The deal is aimed at chopping 100 billion euros off Greece's crushing 350-billion-euro debt load.

But they have wrangled for weeks over the interest rate Greece must pay on the new bonds and pressure has grown in recent days on the European Central Bank and other public creditors to accept a cut in the value of their Greek bond holdings like the private sector creditors.

A debt deal must be sealed in about three weeks at the latest as Greece has to repay 14.5 billion euros of debt on March 20. Otherwise Greece will sink into an uncontrolled default that might spread turmoil across the euro zone.

Papademos promised on Friday this would not happen. "Greece will not default," he said.

Senior euro zone officials have also expressed optimism on the debt deal, though previous predictions of an imminent agreement have failed to become reality.

Greece is in its fifth year of recession, with hopes of a quick exit of the crisis receding rapidly due to squabbling politicians, rising social anger and an inability to get its debt load under control.

'Bad losers' and?'animals'

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:11 p.m. ET Jan. 27, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has labeled Real Madrid's players bad losers and animals after his club won their latest ill-tempered matchup.

Barcelona eliminated cup holder Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey quarterfinals with Wednesday's 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou.

El Mundo newspaper's website released Barca TV footage on Friday of Xavi caught off camera speaking about the game.

"In the changing room, they were (complaining). They're unbelievable - they don't know how to lose," the Spain midfielder said.

Xavi's comments will do little to calm the tense rivalry as he also labeled Madrid players "animals" for their physical challenges, specifically Lassana Diarra after the Madrid midfielder escaped a second booking in the closing moments of the first half.

"I said to him, you just showed (Lionel) Messi a yellow card and now the second one, what happened to it? Send him off," Xavi said he told referee Fernando Teixeira, adding: "It's the player who is responsible, especially if you challenge like an animal."

Madrid ended the match with 10 men after Sergio Ramos was sent off in the 88th minute, and Madrid was vocal in its criticism of Teixeira.

Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka, speaking instead of coach Jose Mourinho as he often does, responded to Xavi's statements on Friday.

"Of course Real Madrid knows how to accept losing, but not in that manner," Karanka said.

Mourinho criticized Teixeira in the postgame news conference and reportedly waited for the referee after the game to voice his opinion.

"Teixeira, you'll go and smoke a cigar now and laugh without feeling any bit of shame," El Mundo Deportivo newspaper quoted Mourinho as saying to Texeira, publishing a photo of the coach in the Camp Nou car park.

Karanka offered a qualified defense of Mourinho.

"Everyone knows our coach has a certain way of being, and there are times when he is OK and others when he's not," Karanka said.

While Madrid played perhaps its best match against Barcelona since Mourinho's arrival in 2010, the team has lost nine times and won only once in the last 14matches against its fiercest rival.

Madrid leads the Spanish league by five points at the halfway point of the season, with three-time defending champion Barcelona in second spot.

Evangeline Lilly Divulges Hobbit Details

evangeline-lilly-the-hobbit

To say Peter Jackson?s adaptation of The Hobbit is an ambitious undertaking is a bit of an understatement. What began as a fairly straightforward one-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein?s classic novel quickly morphed into a sprawling epic told across two feature films. We know that this isn?t necessarily a page-to-screen feature film version of the novel, as Jackson is bringing back many characters from The Lord of the Rings that don?t appear in The Hobbit. Included in this ginormous ensemble is a brand new character created for the film named Tauriel. Lost star Evangeline Lilly plays the character, and she recently spoke quite a bit about what to expect from Turiel, how much she appears in the adaptation, which of the two films she figures into the most, and how long she?s had to be onset. Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

evangeline-lilly-imageIn an interview with EW, Lilly confirmed that Tauriel (a Mirkwood elf) is a bit of a badass:

?She is a warrior. She?s actually the head of the Elven guard. She?s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she?s lethal and deadly.?

When asked how much she figures into the story, Lilly said that her character has been expanded quite a bit and actually appears in the second film much more than the first:

?She?s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding that I had expected it to be. There?s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it?s a little more pressure.?

Lilly said that she?s been filming on and off for the past six months, and she still has to go back for five months of filming. Judging by the amount of time she?s spending on the New Zealand set, I?d assume that she figures pretty prominently into the films. It?ll be interesting to see how Jackson integrates Tauriel with the other characters from the book, and which characters she interacts with the most. For now, we?ve got quite a while to wait. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in 3D December 14th, followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again in 3D on December 13th, 2013.

"Even with a modest decline, the preceding two months of contract activity are the highest in the past four years outside of the homebuyer tax credit period, ... Contract failures remain an issue, reported by one-third of Realtors? over the past few months, but home buyers are not giving up."

Tapes: JFK saw D.C. disconnect (Politico)

Newly released tapes reveal that even 50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy reflected on a very modern political problem ? the disconnect between Washington, D.C., and voters in the rest of the country.

?We?ve got so mechanical an operation here in Washington that it doesn?t have much identity where these people are concerned,? Kennedy was recording saying not long before his death, according to The Associated Press.

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on Tuesday is releasing 45 hours of privately recorded meetings and calls Tuesday, the last of more than 260 hours of recordings that JFK secretly made in the days before his assassination in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, the wire service reports.

In one recording, Kennedy quips about the contradictory reports on Vietnam that he?s receiving from two advisers.

?You both went to the same country?? he asked.

In a portent of the terrible events to come, Kennedy talked about his schedule on the coming Monday, which would become his funeral day.

?Monday?? he asked, according to the AP. ?Well that?s a tough day.?

?It?s a hell of a day, Mr. President,? replied a staffer.

In 1983, the JFK Library began reviewing tapes that lacked classified information and then releasing recordings to the public. In total, more than 40 hours of recordings have been released.

The full audio of the tapes are available at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum website, which can be found here.

(AP) ? Two people were killed in the Birmingham, Ala., area as storms pounded the South and Midwest, prompting tornado warnings in a handful of states early Monday.

Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian said a 16-year-old boy was killed in Clay and an 82-year-old man died in the community of Oak Grove.

A storm system produced a possible tornado that moved across northern Jefferson County around 3:30 a.m., causing damage in Oak Grove, Graysville, Fultondale, Centerpoint, Clay and Trussville, Christian said. He said several homes were destroyed and numerous injuries were reported.

"Some roads are impassable, there are a number of county roads where you have either debris down, trees down, damage from homes," said Yasamie Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. Jefferson County experienced "significant damage," she said.

As day broke, rescue crews used chainsaws to clear fallen trees off roads in Clay, northeast of Birmingham. Searchers went door-to-door calling out to residents, many of whom were trapped by trees that crisscrossed their driveways.

Stevie Sanders woke up around 3:30 a.m. and realized bad weather was on the way. She, her parents and sister hid in the laundry room of their brick home as the wind howled and trees started cracking outside.

"You could feel the walls shaking and you could hear a loud crash. After that it got quiet, and the tree had fallen through my sister's roof," said Sanders, 26.

The family was OK, and her father, Greg Sanders, spent the next hours raking his roof and pulling away pieces of broken lumber.

"It could have been so much worse," he said. "It's like they say, we were just blessed."

In Clanton, about 50 miles south of Birmingham, rescuers were responding to reports of a trailer turned over with people trapped, City Clerk Debbie Orange said.

In Arkansas, there were possible tornadoes in Arkansas, Dallas, Lonoke, Prairie and Cleveland counties Sunday night. The storms also brought hail and strong winds as they moved through parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.

The storm also caused officials to reschedule a planned Monday meeting in Montgomery to receive a study on Alabama's response to a system of killer storms that raked the state last April. That storm killed more than 240 people in the state. Among the hardest hit areas then was Tuscaloosa, where 50 were killed.

J&J to pay $158 million to settle Texas Risperdal case (Reuters)

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) ? Johnson & Johnson said on Thursday it will pay $158 million to settle a Texas lawsuit accusing the drugmaker of improperly marketing its Risperdal anti-psychotic drug to state residents on the Medicaid health program for the poor.

The settlement fully resolves all Risperdal-related claims in Texas, the company said. The agreement is specific to the state of Texas and does not involve any other ongoing state or federal Risperdal litigation.

The deal settles claims brought by Texas in 2004 and involves alleged Medicaid overpayments during the years 1994 to 2008 "and will circumvent potentially lengthy and costly appellate activities," according to a statement from J&J's Janssen Pharmaceuticals unit.

The complaint against J&J and several of its units filed in U.S. district court in Texas had alleged that company representatives "targeted every level of the Texas Medicaid Program with misrepresentations about the safety, superiority, efficacy, appropriate uses and cost effectiveness of Risperdal."

Garmin shows the way with new n?vi 3500 series, Smartphone Link and Approach G6 (video)

The shrink wrap may be barely off the last nüvi refresh, but Garmin clearly wanted to keep a little something back for CES, and here it is: the new 3500 series, the Approach G6 golfing GPS and an Android app.

The new 3500s have the ultra-thin form factor of the company's "prestige" range, while adding an inch of screen space, taking it up to five. As these are the new top-of-the-line, all the nav-goodies you could want, like the Guidance 3.0 nav engine, Digital 3D Traffic and photoReal junction view (covering some 60,000 junctions in the US and Canada), as well as compatibility with its latest Android app (3590LMT only), but more on this shortly. The 3550LM gets free lifetime map updates and will cost $369.99 when it launches in February. The Bluetooth enabled 3590LMT gets all the same, plus lifetime digital 3D traffic updates plus that Smartphone Link support for an extra $30.

If you're more into tearing up the fairway than the freeway, Garmin's lawn friendly Approach G6 golfing GPS is likely more your cup of "tee". Weighing a touch over three ounces, it shouldn't affect your swing, and the number of mapped courses has been upped to 20,000 from the G5's 17,500. The G6 should also be out in February, just in time for that spring trip, and will take an estimated $299 out of your children's college fund.

The last of Garmin's new wares is the aforementioned Android app: Smartphone Link. Essentially adding functionality -- some free, some not so -- to your bluetooth enabled 2012 nüvi. Services such as traffic information, traffic camera images, weather and fuel prices can be piped in via the app (and your cell data plan) instead of being bundled into the GPS itself at an extra cost. Makes sense. Prices for each service will vary, but range from $4.99 to $19.99 for a year's access.

For the full PR, and a video demo of the app, click that link to see more.

3 Great Energy Stocks For Big Dividend Income

The Dogs of the Dow made big headlines as 2011 was ending. The group of 10 stocks posted gains far outpacing the general market with an average adjusted return around 17% for the year. The DJIA (DIA) ended the year with a disappointing 5.5% gain. The two other major index's, Nasdaq (QQQ) and S&P 500 (SPY) fared far worse, posting negative returns on the year. The large gains made by the Dogs came as quite a shock since the Dow Dogs, predicted at the start of each year, are supposed to be the year's worst performers. I believe that attractive dividend yields are what powered the performance of the group. Over the summer fear of global recession came to a head, sparking a massive, market wide sell-off. Negative economic pressures spurred the sell-off. 2012 has its own share of economic pressures. China, the world's largest economy, is slowing from 9% to 7.5%. The European debt crisis isn't over yet. Faced with the possibility of negative returns for the year investors have turned to cash flow strategies and dividend producing stocks such as the Dow Dogs. From the lows experienced in August 2011, to the end of the year the top five Dogs advanced an average of 21% with greatest gain (30.7%) posted by McDonald's (MCD). In contrast the Nasdaq (QQQ) gained 12% in that time, finishing the year in negative territory.

The attractiveness of a guaranteed return in the current market environment is undeniable. If you can stomach the volatility I think this year will bring, buying and holding a high-yielding stock will pay off.

I'm looking for domestic companies, with limited exposures to the slowing global economy. The American utility sector provides both. Public Service Enterprise Group Inc (PEG), CenterPoint Energy Inc (CNP) and PPL Corporation (PPL) are attractive buys.

Public Service Enterprise Group is an integrated utility provider with its headquarters in Newark, NJ. It provides wholesale power to the northeast. PEG is fairly valued, the current p/e is 11.5. 2011 earnings per share are $2.97, however, estimates for next year are lower, about $2.50. The costs of new EPA regulations will cut into the bottom line. Institutional investment in PEG is high, about 62%.

PEG has been trading in a tight range since the 2008 bear market. Currently trading around $32, PEG has not traded under $25 for seven years. Stock momentum has remained moderate while trading in the range and the long-term indicators are consistent with support at $30. The current dividend is 4.3%, which equals $1.37 on an annualized basis.

PPL Corporation is an energy and utility holding company servicing the US and the UK. It has a p/e of 9.9 and has been surprising Wall Street. Third-quarter earnings were up 50% from the previous year and total nine-month revenue was up 36%, causing management to raise full-year guidance. PPL is expecting to continue growing earnings and profit in 2012. The growth is attributed to good performance from UK operations and a shift to more regulated business in its portfolio. PPL's exposure to the European crisis is minimal. The United Kingdom is one of the strongest members of the union, lending billions to the IMF in efforts to aid the troubled union.

PPL has been trending sideways since hitting its lows in early 2009. PPL has strong support at that level, around $25. This support was revealed earlier this year when a long white candle appeared on April 12, 2011. This candle signal was accompanied by a spike in volume, a significant technical signal. Since then PPL has been trending up to its resistance at $30 and looks ready to break out. PPL is trading around $28 and pays a dividend yielding 4.9%.

CenterPoint Energy Inc is an energy delivery company working with electric transmission and natural gas distribution. CNP operates in the midwest from Louisiana, and Texas, up through Minnesota, and Wisconsin. CNP is increasing output of natural gas and increasing net income. CNP's net income included an $811 million stemming from resolutions regarding true-up proceedings with Texas. Earnings ex-payment were up from the previous year with an increase in quarter and year-to-date revenue. A 50%-60% growth in per share earnings is expected in 2012 as well. CenterPoint will continue to expand its natural gas resources, streamline delivery and manage its presence in the field. Heat in the southern plains increased the bottom lines of power companies throughout the region. Weather conditions are expected to be hot again in 2012. I have read about hot weather in every earnings report so far.

CenterPoint has enjoyed a nice bull trend post-recession. In March of 2011 CNP made a definitive break above resistance, where it is now consolidating. In the short term I expect to see CNP trade between $19 and $21 until we see how lower natural gas prices will impact earnings. In this regard, CNP stacked up well against Exelon when I last compared them. The next release date is in early spring, the date has not been set. CNP has a p/e of 15.97, which is a little high when compared with others in the group. The institutional investment is good, 70%, and the dividend pays 4%. CNP's dividend and performance will keep the market interested. I expect to see this stock go to $23 over the next 12 months.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

Factbox: Presidential candidate Rick Santorum (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum competes in the New Hampshire primary election on Thursday in the Republican race to find a challenger to President Barack Obama in November's presidential election.

Here are some facts about him.

* A fervent Catholic, Santorum described himself in New Hampshire this week as the "the Jesus candidate." He is best known for his opposition to abortion, criticism of homosexuality and the teaching of evolution in schools.

* The grandson of an Italian immigrant coal miner, Santorum has seven children.

* His campaign website says Santorum was a "Tea Party kind of guy before there was a Tea Party." He says he fought for fiscal reform like balancing the U.S. budget and revising entitlement programs "before it was in fashion."

* Santorum narrowly lost last week's Iowa caucuses by eight votes. He visited all 99 Iowa counties in the campaign.

* In 2003, Santorum took heat for comments appearing to equate homosexuality with incest, bigamy, adultery and polygamy. In an interview, Santorum said the Supreme Court should uphold state sodomy laws like a Texas law that was before the high court. "If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery," Santorum said.

* Santorum, 53, represented the battleground state of Pennsylvania in Congress, serving first as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and then as a U.S. senator. Santorum, a forceful debater, rose to become chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, making him the third-ranking Senate Republican. But Pennsylvania voters threw him out of the Senate by an 18-point margin in 2006 after a bruising battle in which he was hit for his staunch support of then-President George W. Bush.

Rooney, United deny striker will quit Old Trafford

updated 7:11 p.m. ET Jan. 6, 2012

MANCHESTER, England - Wayne Rooney issued a joint statement with Manchester United denying he's set to leave the Premier League champions.

The action was prompted by a story in Saturday's edition of the Independent claiming that there are cracks in the relationship between Rooney and United manager Alex Ferguson.

The statement says "any suggestion that Manchester United and Wayne Rooney are to part company is complete nonsense" and that the England striker and Ferguson "have always had and retain the utmost respect for each other and look forward to working together in the coming seasons."

The 26-year-old Rooney tweeted: "The independent are talking absolute rubbish," before reiterating his commitment to United.

Man arrested for racist abuse at Liverpool match

updated 7:18 p.m. ET Jan. 7, 2012

LONDON - Merseyside police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with alleged racist abuse towards Oldham Athletic's Tom Adeyemi during Friday's 5-1 FA Cup third round defeat by Liverpool.

Police said the man from Aintree, Merseyside, was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He is in custody and being interviewed by detectives.

Friday's match at Anfield was stopped briefly while 20-year-old midfielder Adeyemi, on loan at the League one (third division) club from Premier League Norwich City, alerted the referee.

On Saturday, Liverpool issued a statement on their website (www.liverpoolfc.tv) saying:

"Liverpool Football Club continue to work closely with Merseyside Police to establish all the facts surrounding the incident that occurred during last night's game.

"We take this matter extremely seriously and have today provided the Police with the evidence we currently have available to us.

"This includes CCTV coverage and still photography of what we believe to be the relevant part of the stadium, statements from matchday stewards in that area and full access to all the footage captured by the cameras filming the match for our in-house tv operation.

"In addition, we have examined records of the tickets purchased in that part of the ground to see if they provide any additional information and have passed that on to the Police."

The incident occurred after Liverpool forward Luis Suarez was handed an eight-game ban by the FA for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in October. (Writing by Ken Ferris, editing by Patrick Johnston; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Fidel Castro says world marching into abyss with shale gas (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Thursday the world was on an "inexorable march toward the abyss," which he blamed in part on the discovery and exploitation of vast reserves of so-called "shale gas" around the world.

Shale gas is natural gas locked in rock formations that in the past decade has been found in great abundance around the world and is now considered a top source of future energy.

Castro, 85, wrote in one of his occasional columns published in Cuban state media that "numerous dangers threaten us, but two of them - nuclear war and climate change - are decisive and both are ever further from approaching a solution."

He said he had only recently heard about the shale gas phenomenon, which has created a drilling boom in some parts of the United States, and when he asked several acquaintances both inside and outside of Cuba about the topic, "none of them had heard a word about it."

Shale gas production is criticized in some quarters because it requires extensive "fracking," which uses water, sand and chemicals to fracture the rock where the gas is trapped to allow it to flow out of the well. Fracking, opponents say, contaminates groundwater sources and can cause other problems.

Castro sided with the critics, quoting reports on the negative effects of fracking and research that said shale gas emits more greenhouse gases than gas produced from conventional wells.

"It is sufficient to point out that among the numerous chemical substances injected with the water to extract this gas is found benzene and toluene, which are substances terribly carcinogenic," he wrote.

The information on shale gas was something "no political cadre or sensible person could ignore," he said.

Castro said he was so intent on getting the word out, he had "let the festive days of the old and new year pass by" working on his column.

The column was the first he had written since November 13 and followed an outburst of rumors on Twitter on Monday that Castro had died.

Castro death rumors break out occasionally and this time prompted a rebuke in a Cuban government website, which blamed the rumors on "necrophilia counter-revolutionaries."

After taking power in Cuba's 1959 revolution and transforming the country into a communist state, Castro ruled the island for 49 years before ill health and old age forced him to step aside four years ago.

He was succeeded as president by younger brother Raul Castro, 80.

Survey: Europe's Sovereign Debt, U.S. Presidential Election Shape Outlook for Distressed Industries

CHICAGO, Dec. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?Corporate restructuring specialists expect technology and energy industries will improve in 2012 while the real estate and retail sectors lag, but a worsening European sovereign debt crisis could be the wrench that squeezes them all.

Six out of 10 respondents to the annual Turnaround Management Association (TMA) Trend Watch survey of more than 200 members said money center banks with exposure to Europe's debt are most vulnerable to the crisis, and problems they experience could lead to tighter credit lines for businesses.

Investment banks ranked second based on 34 percent of responses identifying industries most likely to suffer from Europe's pain, followed by hedge funds and manufacturing, which each had 20 percent. Respondents noted various scenarios arising from interdependent global financial markets in which problems that beset one scatter and multiply, such as a declining euro leading to lower demand both domestically and abroad for products from U.S. manufacturers.

"There is likely to be a direct impact on financial institutions, and the trickle-down effect is the fact that liquidity may not be available because banks are going to have problems," said William ?Lenhart, CTP, a national director in the business restructuring services arm of BDO Consulting in New York. "All these events are likely to feed into an overall lack of consumer confidence, which will also impact the market."?

While Europe's troubles cloud prospects for financial institutions, other industries remain suspended in a post-recession malaise felt since late 2007. The top three industries most likely to be distressed in 2012 were identical to last year's results:

  • Commercial real estate -- 41 percent of responses, down from 64 percent
  • Residential real estate -- 38 percent, about the same as last year
  • Retail -- 33 percent, up from 26 percent last year

The commercial real estate industry's improved standing could reflect financial institutions being more flexible in approving structures for renegotiated loans ? for a price. "They are willing to extend the loan in return for kickers so when the upside comes they get additional cash flow as well as capital gains," said James B. Shein, Ph.D., professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. "To avoid taking commercial properties back into their inventory, financial institutions are taking on more of the concept of a mezzanine loan on commercial real estate properties ? a transaction TMA members work on routinely for companies that need to renegotiate debt."?

The pressure to offload underperforming assets could translate to greater opportunities for corporate restructuring professionals involved in mergers and acquisitions of distressed assets. However, respondents see little evidence that companies will engage in M&A or take other definitive steps to grow.?

Four out of 10 respondents said companies would avoid spending cash reserves in 2012, up from 31 percent last year, and only 18 percent of respondents thought companies would pursue M&A deals. In contrast, 35 percent of respondents surveyed last year ranked M&A as their top choice for ways companies would spend the bulk of cash reserves.??

"The economy remains flat with no clear impetus on the horizon to jump-start it," said Mark S.?Indelicato, TMA president and managing partner with Hahn & Hessen LLP in New York. "Although liquidity may be improving slightly, there still is reluctance by funders of M&A transactions to jump back in the market."

Despite the U.S. jobless rate dipping to 8.6 percent in November, respondents downgraded an already dim outlook for business hiring: Only 1 percent of respondents thought companies would rev up hiring, down from 2 percent in last year's survey. Bolstering that point were three out of 10 respondents who thought companies would increase productivity without increasing personnel, up from 26 percent last year.?

"Whether or not Europe's troubles are taken into account, business owners seem to be acting on the belief that the problems in this economy are going to take a long time to work through," said Thomas Pabst, president of HYPERAMS, LLC, a Chicago-area asset disposition and distressed investing firm.

In August, when unemployment reached 9.2 percent, 60 percent of TMA respondents surveyed said a recession was likely in six to 18 months. However, the mixed signals in the U.S economy elicited varied?opinions in the latest survey about whether a double-dip recession is likely in 2012.

"The wild card in all of this is Europe," said Thomas Henderson, a bankruptcy attorney based in Houston. "If Europe can solve its problems, a double-dip is not going to happen. The economy, at least nationally, is slowly creeping forward, but it can all be brought down in a single stroke."

Roughly?all respondents, 91 percent, think economic conditions are the chief external cause of company troubles, up from 84 percent, and just over a third placed government and regulatory changes at a distant second place. Nearly 60 percent of respondents cited too much debt as the main internal cause of business trouble, down from 70 percent last year.

Technology and energy ranked as top business sectors most likely to improve in 2012 based on roughly a third of responses in each case, and a majority attributed those improved profiles to increased demand for products and services.?

The 2012 U.S. presidential election is yet another factor likely to affect the ability of troubled companies to become healthier, though opinions ran the gamut. Most respondents said a new occupant in the White House would ease government regulations and improve business prospects. Others expressed doubt the course for distressed industries can change absent an economic boost that restores jobs and increases consumer spending. With political gridlock and partisanship likely to intensify in an election year, others worried that the condition of distressed industries ? and the broader economy ? will likewise remain stagnant.

The top 10 stories in Bay Area sports in 2011

1. The Death of Al Davis

When Davis died Oct. 8, at age 82, it left obituary writers scrambling for ways to sum up a man who not only was the face of the Raiders franchise but also its heart, its brains and its combative personality.

The Raiders themselves took their best crack on the day Davis died, describing their patriarch as "unique -- a maverick, a giant among giants, a true legend among legends, the brightest star among stars, a hero, a mentor, a friend."

Davis spent 48 years defining the franchise, as a coach, as general manager and, most famously, as an owner. He controlled everything, right down to the team colors. (Davis picked silver and black because he thought it would look intimidating.)

Stocked with misfits that only Davis and his fans would love, the Raiders went 372-219-11 and won three Super Bowls from 1963 through 2002.

By the time Davis died, his team hadn't finished with a winning record in its past eight seasons. But this year's Raiders are within reach of a playoff spot, buoyed by the audacious trade for quarterback Carson Palmer, a deal that coach Hue Jackson said his old boss would have loved.

As Raiders safety Michael Huff said when the Raiders beat Houston less than 24 hours after Davis' death: "He's never gone in our eyes. We'll never let him go. He's with us."

2. Harbaugh leads 49ers resurgence

A division title. An invigorating new

coach. A new stadium on the way. This was the year in which a long-dormant dynasty came roaring back to life.

The 49ers are 12-3 behind a top-ranked defense that could have them playing deep into January.

Team president Jed York hired Jim Harbaugh as his coach and Trent Baalke as his general manager in January, and the 49ers have done nothing but press the right buttons since.

The list of transformative feats includes a sensational first-round draft pick (sack-machine Aldon Smith), a wave of bargain free agents (kicker David Akers, defensive back Carlos Rogers, safety Donte Whitner) and a surprisingly solid season from quarterback Alex Smith.

Summing up Harbaugh's impact, 49ers Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott told Sirius XM radio that "this might be the greatest coaching that I've ever seen in the history of the game of professional football."

3. Buster Posey busted at home plate

Scott Cousins didn't slide, but the Giants sure did. They were 2?1/2 games up in the National League West on May 25 when Cousins, the nicest villain you will ever meet, blasted into Buster Posey in a home-plate collision.

A broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle cost the star catcher the remainder of the season.

The defending World Series champs never recovered, finishing last in the National League with a .303 on-base percentage.

"If I never hear from Cousins again, or he doesn't play another day in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy," general manager Brian Sabean told KNBR in June. (Sabean has since reached out to apologize.)

Major League Baseball officials deemed it a clean play and have resisted the Giants' pleas for a rule change to protect catchers from being targeted in home-plate collisions.

4. Andrew Luck stays in school

Andrew Luck had an opportunity to take the money and run. Instead, he passed.

The quarterback delayed entry into the NFL so that he could keep Stanford humming as a national power. And Luck delivered as hoped, leading the Cardinal (11-1) to a No. 4 national ranking and a Fiesta Bowl showdown against No. 3 Oklahoma State (11-1)

For the picky, there was a whiff of disappointment: He threw two interceptions in a loss to Oregon that dashed Stanford's hope of a national title and sank Luck's chances of a Heisman Trophy (he was the runner-up again).

But he mostly flourished, securing Stanford career records for passing touchdowns (80) and passing efficiency (161.7), among legions of other records.

The NFL won't have to wait much longer. Luck is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the April draft.

5. Giants oust owner Bill Neukom

In the span of less than a year, Bill Neukom went from waving in a victory parade to waving goodbye.

The Giants' managing general partner and chief executive officer was ousted after an apparent series of disagreements with the 10-member executive committee.

This newspaper broke the news of the shake-up in September, less than 11 months after Neukom hoisted the first World Series trophy in the Giants' 53 years in San Francisco.

In the wake of the report, the Giants announced that Neukom would "retire from his position effective Dec. 31," with Larry Baer taking over CEO duties.

Baseball sources said Neukom's falling out with the executive committee stemmed from how to divvy up the additional millions of dollars that flowed into team coffers after the World Series championship.

6. The Warriors rebuild with splashy names

Though NBA action was disrupted by a labor dispute, Warriors ownership still managed to treat 2011 like one long fast break. New managing partners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber restructured the basketball operations staff, replaced an entire coaching staff and made several changes at the executive level on the business side.

Needing help, ownership also added two men with a combined 16,000 assists. They hired Jerry West, the Hall of Famer and respected front-office architect, in May and added former All-Star guard Mark Jackson as their coach weeks later.

"I fully expect, put it in bold letters, the Golden State Warriors to be a playoff team next year," Jackson said. "If I did not expect that, I would not have taken the job. ... We are looking to turn the Bay Area upside down."

7. The saga of Bryan Stow

In a horrific chapter to a storied sports rivalry, Giants fan Bryan Stow was punched in the head, kicked and slammed to the ground outside Dodger Stadium in March.

"It brings tears to my eyes," longtime Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda said, reacting to the news. "This is not what baseball is all about."

Stow, a paramedic and father of two young children, spent months in a medically induced coma and only recently became able to hold a simple conversation. He is fed by a tube and needs round-the-clock care. Stow, 43, is expected to be permanently disabled.

The Stow family chronicles Bryan's recovery on their blog (support4bryanstow.com).

8. Cal sports make a comeback

Giving new meaning to the term elimination games, the Cal baseball team rallied back from an incredible deficit -- as in $10 million.

The Bears athletic department had announced in the fall of 2010 that it was cutting four sports and reclassifying men's ruby as a varsity club sport as a drastic move to bridge a budget shortfall.

But the endangered Bears rallied. Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau announced in February that enough money had been raised to keep rugby, women's lacrosse, women's gymnastics and men's gymnastics.

The comeback was complete April 8, when Cal announced that baseball would be saved thanks to the former players and alumni who generated $9 million in financial commitments.

Instead of going extinct, the Bears rolled all the way to the College World Series. "A wild ride," coach David Esquer called it.

9. Sharks bounced short of the Cup

Even for fans accustomed to coming up short, this one was tough to take. A freakish bounce off a stanchion finished the Sharks' title hopes May 24, when Vancouver's Kevin Bieksa scored a strange and fortuitous goal during the second overtime of Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

As Bieksa screamed in delight, almost everybody else was still looking for the puck.

"It came right to Bieksa. One more bounce he probably whiffs on it, we're still playing. Nothing we can do about it," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said after the game.

10. Stanford women win first soccer title

With one last spectacular goal, the seniors on the Stanford women's team secured the status as one of the greatest classes in college soccer history.

The Cardinal beat Duke 1-0 in the College Cup final Dec. 4, capping a 95-4-4 record for a senior class and easing the pain from losses in the previous two national title games.

Camille Levin delivered a cross to Teresa Noyola for a point-blank header in the 53rd minute.

"I've never seen a team work so hard for each other and want to win for each other," Levin said. "I've never played on a team like that in my life."
