Gary Oldman Joins RoboCop

RoboCop, Jose Padilha's remake of the classic sci-fi action film, has added a genuine heavyweight to its cast with the announcement that Gary Oldman has signed on to play one of the leads.

Oldman will play Norton, the scientist responsible for creating RoboCop, who finds himself conflicted by the demands of his employers, and the struggle of a former human to rediscover his old self.

Oldman will be joining new RoboCop Joel Kinnaman (star of the US version of The Killing), who spoke recently about how adult a version of the story audiences will be treated to.

"I sincerely hope they?re going for an R rating, because I can?t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13," he said. "That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent."

Production has yet to begin on the film, but with RoboCop currently scheduled to open on 9 August 2013, expect some more casting announcements sooner rather than later...

Judge Invalidates ?Quickie? Union Election Rule for Lack of Quorum

WASHINGTON ? A federal judge on Monday struck down new regulations governing union elections, saying the National Labor Relations Board did not follow proper voting procedures when it approved the rules last year.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg said the board never had a quorum when it voted on the rules that speed up the pace of union representation elections. He did not address the merits of the rules and said the NLRB could simply take a new vote to approve them.

Business groups and Republicans had vigorously challenged the rules, which took effect April 30, claiming they didn?t give company managers enough time to counter union organizers. Unions contend the new rules curb needless litigation that companies use to stall the election process.

But Boasberg?s decision focuses only on a technical problem. At the time the rules were approved in December, the five-member board only had three members ? two Democrats and one Republican. Federal law requires a quorum of at least three board members to consider new rules.

Boasberg found that the Republican, Brian Hayes, did not technically participate in a final vote on the rule. When the rule was sent to Hayes electronically, he never formally voted because he already had expressed his opposition to it at a public hearing. But that was not enough to satisfy the strict requirements of the law, Boasberg ruled.

NLRB spokeswoman Nancy Cleeland said lawyers were still reviewing the decision and did not have any immediate comment. Under the decision, the new rules are invalid and the old union election rules apply.

AFL-CIO general counsel Lynn Rhinehart called the judge?s ruling ?flat-out wrong.?

?Brian Hayes was a sitting, working, paid member of the NLRB when the rule was adopted, and remains so today,? she said. ?He had made his opposition to the election rules widely known, and, in fact, two weeks ago he published his dissent on the rules.?

The NLRB now has a full contingent of five members after President Barack Obama bypassed the Senate in January to fill three vacant seats. But Republicans have challenged those appointments, saying the Senate was not technically in recess when Obama installed them.

Britain revokes lifetime Olympic doping bans

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Olympic committee has rescinded its rule on lifetime bans for drug offenders to fall into line with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The British Olympic Association revoked its bylaw following a ruling last month by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that struck down the lifetime bans. WADA had previously declared Britain as "noncompliant" with the global code.

Thursday's decision came as WADA's executive committee was meeting in Montreal. WADA is now expected to declare the BOA is in compliance. The BOA said it would notify WADA immediately in writing.

CAS ruled on April 30 that Britain's Olympic bans amounted to an additional sanction.

The decision cleared the way for British sprinter Dwain Chambers and cyclist David Millar to become eligible to compete at the London Olympics.

Markets recover as eurozone dodges recession

LONDON (AP) ? European markets bounced back from early losses on news that the 17-country eurozone has narrowly dodged recession, thanks mainly to strong growth in Germany, though concerns persisted that Greece's political impasse could eventually force it to leave the currency bloc.

Official EU statistics showed the eurozone economy was flat in the first quarter compared with the previous three-month period, better than the 0.2 percent drop that analysts had been expecting. A drop would have put the eurozone technically back into recession, which is defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

"In the current context, zero growth in the eurozone in the first quarter is relatively good news," said Marie Diron, senior economic adviser at Ernst & Young. "It suggests that the economy is not falling off a cliff under the burden of fiscal austerity."

Growth of 0.5 percent in Germany helped offset recessions in seven countries, including large economies like Spain and Italy. But such imbalances remain a worrying weakness in the eurozone. The most fragile economies are also those that are enacting the most punishing austerity measures to lower debt. The result is a currency union in which countries' economic paths are diverging.

After earlier losses, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.2 percent to 5,474 while Germany's DAX was up 0.3 percent at 6,472 and France's CAC-40 added 0.7 percent to 3,080. The euro was up 0.2 percent at $1.2852.

Wall Street was headed for a higher opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures rising 0.6 percent to 12,731 while S&P 500 futures adding 0.6 percent to 1,341.50.

The outlook for the eurozone remains darkened by the political crisis in Greece, where party leaders were struggling for a ninth day to form a coalition government.

No party won an outright majority in the May 6 election, causing an impasse that has raised questions about Greece's ability to stay in the eurozone. Power-sharing efforts have failed so far after the left-wing Syriza party, which came second in the vote, insisted that the draconian terms of Greece's financial rescue agreements be scrapped or rewritten.

More talks will be held Tuesday, but hopes for a deal are low and expectations are increasing that the country will have to hold new elections. With polls showing increasing support for Syriza, analysts expect a showdown between whatever new government comes to power in Greece and the country's bailout rescuers.

"The exit of Greece from the single currency has become probable. Not so long ago it was impossible," analysts at DBS Bank said.

Looking ahead, investors will keep an eye on U.S. economic indicators for inflation, retail sales and surveys on manufacturing due later in the day. The recovery in the world's largest economy has been tentative, with employment gains uneven, though corporate earnings have been mostly upbeat. Investors will be searching for signs of strength that might offset the turmoil in Europe and weakening growth in Asia, particularly China.

Asian markets fell earlier on Tuesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 down 0.8 percent to 8,900.74, its lowest close since Feb. 3. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.8 percent to 1,898.96. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.7 percent to 4,266.30.

Mainland Chinese shares extended their losses, with the Shanghai Composite Index hitting another three-month low, losing 0.2 percent to 2,374.90. But Hong Kong's Hang Seng, which some analysts said was oversold after more than a week of losses, rebounded 0.8 percent to 19,894.31.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 2 cents to $94.80 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.35 to settle at $94.78 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the dollar rose to 79.92 yen from 79.86 yen late Monday in New York.

He adds, "Apple may already be reviewing Google?s submitted code for a Chrome browser for iOS."

Schacter says we can expect a Chrome browser for iOS as soon as Q2, but if not this quarter, then definitely this year.

If properly executed this would be a big deal for both Apple and Google.

Google is currently paying Apple an estimated 50%-60% revenue share for searches done through the Safari search box, says Schacter. So, if there is $1 billion in gross search revenue from iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches, Apple gets $600 million, Google only gets $400 million.

By cutting out Safari, and owning all the searches, Google gets to keep all of the revenue it generates.

Google's Chrome browser has been a smash hit on the desktop surging past Firefox and Safari to become the second most popular web browser after Internet Explorer. If Google can produce a fully functional iOS browser it would dent Safari's ~99% share of iOS devices.

The catch for Google is that Apple doesn't allow third-party applications like Chrome to act as defaults. So, if you click on a link in an email it will take you mobile Safari by default instead of Chrome. That will push you to use Safari more and more.

However, as Schacter says, this could be the second wave of browser wars. Microsoft was hammered in the late nineties by the government for making IE the default browser on Windows, and thus marginalizing the then dominant Netscape browser.

If Apple is going to follow the same playbook, the government too might follow the same playbook and come after Apple. And don't forget, Google has been active in D.C. making friends, while Apple has has largely given D.C. a cold shoulder.

All that said, the most important thing to consider is whether or not Google's Chrome will be better than mobile Safari. Google has failed to deliver solid applications for iOS in the past.

Exactly one month before his new album, Looking 4 Myself, hits shelves, the wheels of Usher's promotional wagon gained momentum when the entertainer provided America with a set of contrasting performances and chuckles during this weekend's "Saturday Night Live" episode, which was hosted by "SNL" alum Will Ferrell.

Rocking simple black jeans, a jacket and tee, and a faux hawk, Ursh looked vibrant and energetic as he performed his brand-new single "Scream." Unlike previous expertly choreographed numbers for his dance tunes, the sunglass-donning singer showed off minimal, but nonetheless slick, moves, while his band and two backup singers filled his Studio 8 back stage.

"We at it again, 'SNL,' and this time we going to make you scream," he told the crowd at the start of the energetic cut.

His second performance was for the Diplo-produced cut "Climax," during which the singer showed off his sensual and smooth side. Clearing the area of his accompanying singers, Usher made his smooth falsetto the forefront of the number. It was a simple, authentic rendition of the hit song that was essential proof of his multi-faceted vocal talents.

In addition to his set of performances, the ATL singer appeared alongside Ferrell in the "2012 Funkytown Debate" skit, in which he played a character named Galactic Fantastic. Dressed in some sparkling duds and an oversized afro, the R&B entertainer played a wacky sidekick who brought in his singing voice to support Farrell's side of the grooving song debate.

Usher got even more airtime when he was joined by Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Michael Bolton, Will Ferrell and Natalie Portman, who all made cameos in the episode's special 100th Digital Short. Paying tribute to some of the most popular Shorts like "Di-- in a Box" and "Shy Ronnie," Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and the Biebs most fittingly put on a big-time celebration with accompanying jingle. It was an all-star affair and brought back some major giggles — especially when JT and Portman reprised their original Short roles.

To add to the night's surprises, Liam Neeson popped up during a "Weekend Update" segment for the Nicolas Cage parody "Get in the Cage." Neeson's upcoming summer flick "Battleship" was the main topic of conversation, with Samberg, as Cage, asking his usual "How am I not in that movie?!" Samberg went on to babble jealous nonsense about Neeson's other flicks in his spot-on Cage impersonation.

Like last week's musical guest Rihanna, Mr. Raymond's gig on the late-night sketch show marks his third appearance. And it's one of the many stops that the singer will make to promote his upcoming project. He's set to kick off the "Today" show's summer concert series on Friday, perform at the Billboard Music Awards on May 20 and head overseas for Capital FM's Summertime Ball 2012 in London in early June.

Mick Jagger will perform double duty as host and musical guest on next week's "Saturday Night Live" season finale.

Storage is being cut in half over the Le Pan II to just 4GB between the internal memory and a bundled microSD card, though, and the battery is good for a very modest five hours. Nonetheless, the $249 sticker and a May release will put the MP977 in the running with the slower but more capacious Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

Matsunichi also teased us with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it'll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.
