Obama stays silent on Dems mired in scandals

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When President Barack Obama ran for re-election last year, he and his advisers were quick to condemn comments from Republicans that were deemed offensive or demeaning to women.

But now, with two prominent members of Obama's Democratic Party admitting to lewd online behavior and facing allegations of sexual harassment, the White House is conspicuously silent.

Republicans say that smacks of hypocrisy. But White House officials draw a distinction, saying Obama's comments last year were in response to the policy implications of the controversial views espoused by the two Republicans who were, at the time, running for Senate.

White House spokesman Jay Carney fended off questions Wednesday about both San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who is facing numerous sexual harassment allegations, and Democrat Anthony Weiner, the former congressman currently running for New York City Mayor. Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 after admitting he sent racy pictures and messages over the Internet to women he did not know. Earlier this month, Weiner acknowledged that he engaged in similar behavior even after resigning.

"I don't have any comment on that any more than I've had comment on other similar issues," Carney said of Filner.

He responded similarly when asked about Weiner, saying "there's plenty of coverage, plenty of stuff to cover without us commenting."

The White House's silence has drawn criticism from Republicans. Party officials say the president's team is being hypocritical given how quickly Democrats jumped on controversial comments about rape made by GOP candidates last year.

"Interesting how we're hearing crickets from the Democrats when it comes time to condemn activity from some of their own," said Kirsten Kukowski, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

Indeed, Obama and his campaign advisers quickly denounced Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin's assertion last year that women's bodies have ways to prevent pregnancy "if it's a legitimate rape." The president said the Republican congressman's comments were "offensive" and underscored a significant difference in approach to women's issues between Democrats and the GOP.

Obama's campaign was also highly critical of Richard Mourdock, who ran for the Senate from Indiana and said if a pregnancy results from rape, it is "something God intended to happen." The president's campaign said Mourdock's comments were "outrageous and demeaning to women."

Akin and Mourdock lost their respective races, while Obama ran up big margins among female voters in his contest against Republican Mitt Romney.

While the controversies surrounding Akin and Murdock focused on words, the spectacles involving Weiner and Filner center on actions.

Weiner, who is married, has vowed to stay in the New York mayor's race despite new revelations about sexually explicit messages he sent to several women. Filner, the mayor of the nation's eighth-largest city, says he will enter two weeks of "intensive" therapy as he battles a sexual harassment lawsuit from his former communications director, as well as detailed account of alleged advances by seven other women.

While the White House has stayed silent about both Democrats, other party leaders have not. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi rebuked Weiner and Filner for "reprehensible" behavior and said both men should "get a clue."

Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has also called for Filner to resign, saying his alleged misconduct is "reprehensible and indefensible." The chairwoman also backed Weiner's resignation from Congress two years ago.

NBA Chat With Lang Greene 7/31/13

Lang Greene

These questions are tough because I didn?t read Bill?s chat this week and I?m also not familiar with the context of the original question / Bill?s answer.

Here?s my deal. If you?re talking about whether Hakeem can get off his shot against those guys right now ? I would have to agree with Bill. I mean he wouldn?t shoot 70 percent but he wouldn?t be shut down either. What makes Hakeem different (and helps him in this case) was his skill set was so diverse offensively. Outside shot, hook shot, fadeaway, etc. Most pro guys stop playing because their bodies can no longer take the rigors of an 82 game season ? not because those guys all of a sudden cannot play the game anymore.

There are plenty of retired guys right now who would show up at your rec league tonight and go for 35 with ease.

On the other side, D12 and Duncan would have their way with Dream right now offensively in their own right.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn Explains Why Karen Gillan Had To Shave Her Head

James GunnOne of the most memorable moments of Comic-Con was when actress Karen Gillan surprised fans by revealing she had gone bald for her role as Nebula in Guardians Of The Galaxy. When Karen Gillan made the surprise reveal, fans at Comic-Con cheered. However, some online fans evidently had a different reaction to Gillan?s baldness.

As first reported on Comicbook.com, Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn recently tweeted about getting hate messages over making Karen Gillan shave her head.

Despite the hate messages, James Gunn hasn?t been shy about answering fan questions through Formspring.Unsurprisingly, a couple of the questions have had to do with Karen Gillan?s baldness.

When asked if the head shaving was his decision, James Gunn replied, ?Well basically yes. It was explained that whoever played Nebula would have to shave her head. So Karen knew about this when she auditioned.? In regards to why he didn?t just have her use a bald cap, James Gunn explained, ?A bald cap looks fake when seen repeatedly up close and during long action sequences.?

In addition to the baldness related questions, James Gunn also gave a couple other noteworthy answers to Guardians Of The Galaxy questions. In regards to if Peter Serafinowicz is really a Nova Corps Officer, James Gunn said, ?He is telling the truth. It?s not a secret as he was very prominent in the footage shown at Comicon. He?s John C Reilly?s superior and he?s awesome!?

In regards to if his brother [actor Sean Gunn] will have a cameo in Guardians Of The Galaxy, James Gunn replied, ?Cameo? Not quite.? Gunn?s reply actually makes us think that maybe his brother has a fairly large role in the film, which would not quite be a cameo.

Cyclospora: 398 Sick, Bagged Salad Source of Multi-State Outbreak ...

Cyclospora, a rare parasite usually found in tropical or sub-tropical regions, has sickened 398 people in 15 states, hospitalizing 21 of them. Most, but not all, of these illnesses are part of a multi-state outbreak linked to contaminated bagged salad mix sold at grocery stores and served at restaurants.

Cyclospora Outbreak? The evidence points to a salad mix containing iceberg and romaine lettuce, as well as carrots and red cabbage as the source of the outbreak reported in Iowa and Nebraska,?? said Steven Mandernach, chief of the Food and Consumer Safety Bureau of the?Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA). ?Food Poisoning Bulletin has been reporting restaurant lettuce as a source of Cyclospora illness for weeks. ?Nebraska?s Department of Health and Human Services reported that the? pre-packaged, pre-washed salad mix ?came through national distribution channels.? The tainted produce was not grown in a garden or commercial field ?in Nebraska or Iowa, health officials said.

Cases in Iowa and Nebraska make up 55 percent of Illnesses reported. Other states have have confirmed that some of their cases are linked to these outbreak cases.

There are a total of 398 cases from 15 states. They reported the following totals to Food Poisoning Bulletin today: Iowa (143), Texas (122), Nebraska (76), Florida (24), Wisconsin* (10), New York (5), Illinois* (4) Georgia (3), Connecticut (2), Missouri (2),? Arkansas* (1), Kansas *(1), Minnesota (1), New Jersey (1), Ohio (1),?(*Notes: Arkansas health officials do not believe their case is part of the outbreak based on information from an interview with the patient. Florida has not found a common restaurant or food exposure among its case patients.? One of the cases in Illinois was likely exposed while visiting Iowa. The case in Kansas was likely exposed while visiting Nebraska. In Wisconsin, eight of the 10 cases are linked to the outbreak, one is not and one is pending test results. ?The total number of cases in this story is current per each state today and therefore exceeds the number on the CDC?s most recent update.)

Fewer than 150 Cyclospora cases are reported nationwide each year. In the past, outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to travel or imported produce including?mesclun lettuce, basil, snow peas, and raspberries.?People become infected with Cyclospora when they eat or drink food or water containing microscopic amounts of fecal matter contaminated with the parasite.Symptoms of an infection, called cyclosporiasis, ?can take up to two weeks to develop and last for as long as two months. They include: explosive diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, gassiness, abdominal cramps, weight loss, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, fatigue and malaise. Anyone experiencing these symptoms for more than a few days should see a doctor, especially if?your eyes have a sunken look, a dry mouth and tongue, or you have reduced urine output and tear production which are all symptoms of dehydration.

Cyclospora-ImageCyclospora infections are treated with an antiobiotic that contains sulfa called Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) which is sold under the brand names Bactrim, Septra and Cotrim. There is no effective alternative to these drugs. Patients with a sulfa allergy can have supportive care of symptoms.

Gwyneth Paltrow 'believes that the English education ... - Celebitchy

Last year around this time, there were UK sources claiming that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were preparing to move their family to LA. The claim was that Gwyneth was homesick and that she wanted to be closer to her mom and her brother Jake. Well, Goop and Chris DID buy a new home in LA, although they?ve spent much of the last year in London, like always. Now The Mail is reporting again that Goop wants to move her kids to LA so they can spend a few years getting an American education? but sources say Goop definitely wants Apple and Moses to go to high school/prep school in England because American schools are too peasanty. Basically.

She has lived in London for a decade and calls it her ?adopted home?, but Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow is moving her family back to Los Angeles. The 40-year-old actress and her rock-star husband Chris Martin of Coldplay plan to make LA their home for at least the next two years. The family will move in time for their children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, to start the school term in September.

A source said: ?Gwyneth has loved living in London but America will always be home and she wants to be closer to her family. Her mother and brother live in California and she plans to spend the next couple of years in Los Angeles while her children are young enough for their education not to be affected. She misses her family terribly and now is the time to move.?

?Her children have English accents and once they start senior school Gwyneth says the family will likely return to the UK because she believes that the English education system is second to none.?

Rumours have been rife for months that the family was planning to move back to California after they forked out ?6.6 million on an opulent new home in a private Hollywood Hills estate. The 8,000 square-foot house in the exclusive Brentwood area is the most expensive in the couple?s property empire which includes their ?4.6 million home in North London, a ?3.2 million penthouse flat in New York and a ?3.4 million house in the Hamptons near New York.

Designed by renowned US architect Windsor Smith the home has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a separate stable block. Paltrow, famed for her eco-friendly ways, even had an entrance hall made with stones recovered from a Peruvian schoolhouse.

Friends say Gwyneth longs to spend more time with her 70-year-old widowed mother Blythe Danner and her director brother Jake as well as friends like godfather Steven Spielberg: ?Gwyneth misses her family terribly and while she has grown to love London and her children have English accents, now is the time to move. The kids have said goodbye to their school friends and they are having a final European holiday before the big move.?

[From The Mail]

Granted, I had an American public school education and my mother is a public school teacher, so I have a bias about people disrespecting American education out of hand. I?m not saying that the American public school education isn?t broken in some cities, in some counties, or in some states, but I just think it?s wrong and unfair to dismiss the American education system out of hand. But beyond that, it?s not like Gwyneth is going to be sending her kids to public high school in America or England either way ? they?re going to be going to private schools, no matter what. And if she?s interested in having a debate about which country has the best PRIVATE schools? well, then I?ve got nothing. I have no idea. But I would be interested in seeing Moses Martin at Eton with all of the sons of dukes and earls and MPs. That would be interesting.

Former tropical storm still a remnant low pressure area

NASA and NOAA satellites continue to keep a close eye on the remnants of Tropical Storm Dorian as they make their way through the eastern Caribbean Sea.

On Saturday, July 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, Dorian was still a tropical storm, but that didn't last. Dorian was near 18.5N and 52.1W, about 720 miles (1,160 km) east of the Northern Leeward Islands. Dorian's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph (65 kph) and it was moving to the west at 23 mph (37 kph).

By July 28, Dorian weakened to a remnant low pressure area. It was producing showers and thunderstorms that extended a few hundred miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Dorian's remnants passed north of the Leeward Islands on July 28.

On Monday, July 29, remnants of Doran and a trough (elongated area) of low pressure were generating disorganized clouds and thunderstorms a couple of hundred miles north of Puerto Rico. Those clouds were seen by NOAA's GOES-13 satellite. The GOES-13 satellite image captured on July 29 at 14:45 UTC (10:45 a.m. EDT) shows that Dorian seems to have regained a more rounded appearance. However, the National Hurricane Center noted that the disturbance still does not appear to have a closed low-level circulation and surface pressures remain high across the area. If pressure drops, it would be a sign that the low pressure area is consolidating, but that was not occurring during the morning of July 29.

GOES satellites are managed and operated by NOAA, and the GOES image was created by NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Environmental conditions are expected to be only marginally conducive for regeneration to occur, and the National Hurricane Center gives Dorian's remnants a medium chance, about 40 percent of becoming a tropical cyclone again. The remnant low is moving to the west and is expected to move to the west-northwest in the next two days. As it continues moving it is expected to move across the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30 and 31.
