Longtime Cincinnati sports ed. Harmon dead at 97

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Longtime newspaper sports editor and columnist Pat Harmon has died at age 97.

Harmon's role as a sports editor spanned nearly five decades for three newspapers: the Champaign News-Gazette, the Cedar Rapids Gazette, and then the Cincinnati Post from 1951-85. Harmon went on to serve as historian for the National Football Foundation from 1986-2005.

He grew up in Freeport, Ill. He wrote for the local newspaper, then attended the University of Illinois where he wrote articles for the Champaign newspaper. In Cincinnati, he was known for his storytelling style as he chronicled the Reds, Cleveland Browns and then the new Cincinnati Bengals, as well as the region's major college sports teams.

Services will be Thursday in Cincinnati. Harmon is survived by Anna, his wife of 73 years, and 11 children.
