Javier Alvarez delivers a gem for Lakewood in American Legion baseball tournament

Javier Alvarez had quite a day for himself Sunday at the American Legion California state baseball tournament in Yountville.

Alvarez pitched 8<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>3 no-hit innings for Lakewood Post 496 and led his team to a 3-0 victory over Merced in an elimination game. He struck out 10 batters and walked three, but was relieved by J.P. Crawford in the ninth after an infield error allowed Merced to load the bases. Crawford needed just one pitch to induce a game-ending double play and secure the combined no-hitter.

Alvarez was also a star at the plate with two RBI singles. Anthony Timmons had two hits and an RBI as well while Nick Reeser and Austin Colvin each had two hits and a run. A day after being held to three hits by Murrieta, Lakewood had nine Sunday.

Lakewood returns to action at 9 a.m. today against San Mateo in another elimination game. The winner of this week's tournament advances to the Western Regional in Fairfield.
