Obama stays silent on Dems mired in scandals

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When President Barack Obama ran for re-election last year, he and his advisers were quick to condemn comments from Republicans that were deemed offensive or demeaning to women.

But now, with two prominent members of Obama's Democratic Party admitting to lewd online behavior and facing allegations of sexual harassment, the White House is conspicuously silent.

Republicans say that smacks of hypocrisy. But White House officials draw a distinction, saying Obama's comments last year were in response to the policy implications of the controversial views espoused by the two Republicans who were, at the time, running for Senate.

White House spokesman Jay Carney fended off questions Wednesday about both San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who is facing numerous sexual harassment allegations, and Democrat Anthony Weiner, the former congressman currently running for New York City Mayor. Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 after admitting he sent racy pictures and messages over the Internet to women he did not know. Earlier this month, Weiner acknowledged that he engaged in similar behavior even after resigning.

"I don't have any comment on that any more than I've had comment on other similar issues," Carney said of Filner.

He responded similarly when asked about Weiner, saying "there's plenty of coverage, plenty of stuff to cover without us commenting."

The White House's silence has drawn criticism from Republicans. Party officials say the president's team is being hypocritical given how quickly Democrats jumped on controversial comments about rape made by GOP candidates last year.

"Interesting how we're hearing crickets from the Democrats when it comes time to condemn activity from some of their own," said Kirsten Kukowski, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

Indeed, Obama and his campaign advisers quickly denounced Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin's assertion last year that women's bodies have ways to prevent pregnancy "if it's a legitimate rape." The president said the Republican congressman's comments were "offensive" and underscored a significant difference in approach to women's issues between Democrats and the GOP.

Obama's campaign was also highly critical of Richard Mourdock, who ran for the Senate from Indiana and said if a pregnancy results from rape, it is "something God intended to happen." The president's campaign said Mourdock's comments were "outrageous and demeaning to women."

Akin and Mourdock lost their respective races, while Obama ran up big margins among female voters in his contest against Republican Mitt Romney.

While the controversies surrounding Akin and Murdock focused on words, the spectacles involving Weiner and Filner center on actions.

Weiner, who is married, has vowed to stay in the New York mayor's race despite new revelations about sexually explicit messages he sent to several women. Filner, the mayor of the nation's eighth-largest city, says he will enter two weeks of "intensive" therapy as he battles a sexual harassment lawsuit from his former communications director, as well as detailed account of alleged advances by seven other women.

While the White House has stayed silent about both Democrats, other party leaders have not. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi rebuked Weiner and Filner for "reprehensible" behavior and said both men should "get a clue."

Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has also called for Filner to resign, saying his alleged misconduct is "reprehensible and indefensible." The chairwoman also backed Weiner's resignation from Congress two years ago.

Lang Greene

These questions are tough because I didn?t read Bill?s chat this week and I?m also not familiar with the context of the original question / Bill?s answer.

Here?s my deal. If you?re talking about whether Hakeem can get off his shot against those guys right now ? I would have to agree with Bill. I mean he wouldn?t shoot 70 percent but he wouldn?t be shut down either. What makes Hakeem different (and helps him in this case) was his skill set was so diverse offensively. Outside shot, hook shot, fadeaway, etc. Most pro guys stop playing because their bodies can no longer take the rigors of an 82 game season ? not because those guys all of a sudden cannot play the game anymore.

There are plenty of retired guys right now who would show up at your rec league tonight and go for 35 with ease.

On the other side, D12 and Duncan would have their way with Dream right now offensively in their own right.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn Explains Why Karen Gillan Had To Shave Her Head

James GunnOne of the most memorable moments of Comic-Con was when actress Karen Gillan surprised fans by revealing she had gone bald for her role as Nebula in Guardians Of The Galaxy. When Karen Gillan made the surprise reveal, fans at Comic-Con cheered. However, some online fans evidently had a different reaction to Gillan?s baldness.

As first reported on Comicbook.com, Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn recently tweeted about getting hate messages over making Karen Gillan shave her head.

Despite the hate messages, James Gunn hasn?t been shy about answering fan questions through Formspring.Unsurprisingly, a couple of the questions have had to do with Karen Gillan?s baldness.

When asked if the head shaving was his decision, James Gunn replied, ?Well basically yes. It was explained that whoever played Nebula would have to shave her head. So Karen knew about this when she auditioned.? In regards to why he didn?t just have her use a bald cap, James Gunn explained, ?A bald cap looks fake when seen repeatedly up close and during long action sequences.?

In addition to the baldness related questions, James Gunn also gave a couple other noteworthy answers to Guardians Of The Galaxy questions. In regards to if Peter Serafinowicz is really a Nova Corps Officer, James Gunn said, ?He is telling the truth. It?s not a secret as he was very prominent in the footage shown at Comicon. He?s John C Reilly?s superior and he?s awesome!?

In regards to if his brother [actor Sean Gunn] will have a cameo in Guardians Of The Galaxy, James Gunn replied, ?Cameo? Not quite.? Gunn?s reply actually makes us think that maybe his brother has a fairly large role in the film, which would not quite be a cameo.

Cyclospora: 398 Sick, Bagged Salad Source of Multi-State Outbreak ...

Cyclospora, a rare parasite usually found in tropical or sub-tropical regions, has sickened 398 people in 15 states, hospitalizing 21 of them. Most, but not all, of these illnesses are part of a multi-state outbreak linked to contaminated bagged salad mix sold at grocery stores and served at restaurants.

Cyclospora Outbreak? The evidence points to a salad mix containing iceberg and romaine lettuce, as well as carrots and red cabbage as the source of the outbreak reported in Iowa and Nebraska,?? said Steven Mandernach, chief of the Food and Consumer Safety Bureau of the?Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA). ?Food Poisoning Bulletin has been reporting restaurant lettuce as a source of Cyclospora illness for weeks. ?Nebraska?s Department of Health and Human Services reported that the? pre-packaged, pre-washed salad mix ?came through national distribution channels.? The tainted produce was not grown in a garden or commercial field ?in Nebraska or Iowa, health officials said.

Cases in Iowa and Nebraska make up 55 percent of Illnesses reported. Other states have have confirmed that some of their cases are linked to these outbreak cases.

There are a total of 398 cases from 15 states. They reported the following totals to Food Poisoning Bulletin today: Iowa (143), Texas (122), Nebraska (76), Florida (24), Wisconsin* (10), New York (5), Illinois* (4) Georgia (3), Connecticut (2), Missouri (2),? Arkansas* (1), Kansas *(1), Minnesota (1), New Jersey (1), Ohio (1),?(*Notes: Arkansas health officials do not believe their case is part of the outbreak based on information from an interview with the patient. Florida has not found a common restaurant or food exposure among its case patients.? One of the cases in Illinois was likely exposed while visiting Iowa. The case in Kansas was likely exposed while visiting Nebraska. In Wisconsin, eight of the 10 cases are linked to the outbreak, one is not and one is pending test results. ?The total number of cases in this story is current per each state today and therefore exceeds the number on the CDC?s most recent update.)

Fewer than 150 Cyclospora cases are reported nationwide each year. In the past, outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to travel or imported produce including?mesclun lettuce, basil, snow peas, and raspberries.?People become infected with Cyclospora when they eat or drink food or water containing microscopic amounts of fecal matter contaminated with the parasite.Symptoms of an infection, called cyclosporiasis, ?can take up to two weeks to develop and last for as long as two months. They include: explosive diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, gassiness, abdominal cramps, weight loss, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, fatigue and malaise. Anyone experiencing these symptoms for more than a few days should see a doctor, especially if?your eyes have a sunken look, a dry mouth and tongue, or you have reduced urine output and tear production which are all symptoms of dehydration.

Cyclospora-ImageCyclospora infections are treated with an antiobiotic that contains sulfa called Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) which is sold under the brand names Bactrim, Septra and Cotrim. There is no effective alternative to these drugs. Patients with a sulfa allergy can have supportive care of symptoms.

Gwyneth Paltrow 'believes that the English education ... - Celebitchy

Last year around this time, there were UK sources claiming that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin were preparing to move their family to LA. The claim was that Gwyneth was homesick and that she wanted to be closer to her mom and her brother Jake. Well, Goop and Chris DID buy a new home in LA, although they?ve spent much of the last year in London, like always. Now The Mail is reporting again that Goop wants to move her kids to LA so they can spend a few years getting an American education? but sources say Goop definitely wants Apple and Moses to go to high school/prep school in England because American schools are too peasanty. Basically.

She has lived in London for a decade and calls it her ?adopted home?, but Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow is moving her family back to Los Angeles. The 40-year-old actress and her rock-star husband Chris Martin of Coldplay plan to make LA their home for at least the next two years. The family will move in time for their children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, to start the school term in September.

A source said: ?Gwyneth has loved living in London but America will always be home and she wants to be closer to her family. Her mother and brother live in California and she plans to spend the next couple of years in Los Angeles while her children are young enough for their education not to be affected. She misses her family terribly and now is the time to move.?

?Her children have English accents and once they start senior school Gwyneth says the family will likely return to the UK because she believes that the English education system is second to none.?

Rumours have been rife for months that the family was planning to move back to California after they forked out ?6.6 million on an opulent new home in a private Hollywood Hills estate. The 8,000 square-foot house in the exclusive Brentwood area is the most expensive in the couple?s property empire which includes their ?4.6 million home in North London, a ?3.2 million penthouse flat in New York and a ?3.4 million house in the Hamptons near New York.

Designed by renowned US architect Windsor Smith the home has six bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a separate stable block. Paltrow, famed for her eco-friendly ways, even had an entrance hall made with stones recovered from a Peruvian schoolhouse.

Friends say Gwyneth longs to spend more time with her 70-year-old widowed mother Blythe Danner and her director brother Jake as well as friends like godfather Steven Spielberg: ?Gwyneth misses her family terribly and while she has grown to love London and her children have English accents, now is the time to move. The kids have said goodbye to their school friends and they are having a final European holiday before the big move.?

[From The Mail]

Granted, I had an American public school education and my mother is a public school teacher, so I have a bias about people disrespecting American education out of hand. I?m not saying that the American public school education isn?t broken in some cities, in some counties, or in some states, but I just think it?s wrong and unfair to dismiss the American education system out of hand. But beyond that, it?s not like Gwyneth is going to be sending her kids to public high school in America or England either way ? they?re going to be going to private schools, no matter what. And if she?s interested in having a debate about which country has the best PRIVATE schools? well, then I?ve got nothing. I have no idea. But I would be interested in seeing Moses Martin at Eton with all of the sons of dukes and earls and MPs. That would be interesting.

Former tropical storm still a remnant low pressure area

NASA and NOAA satellites continue to keep a close eye on the remnants of Tropical Storm Dorian as they make their way through the eastern Caribbean Sea.

On Saturday, July 27 at 11 a.m. EDT, Dorian was still a tropical storm, but that didn't last. Dorian was near 18.5N and 52.1W, about 720 miles (1,160 km) east of the Northern Leeward Islands. Dorian's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph (65 kph) and it was moving to the west at 23 mph (37 kph).

By July 28, Dorian weakened to a remnant low pressure area. It was producing showers and thunderstorms that extended a few hundred miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Dorian's remnants passed north of the Leeward Islands on July 28.

On Monday, July 29, remnants of Doran and a trough (elongated area) of low pressure were generating disorganized clouds and thunderstorms a couple of hundred miles north of Puerto Rico. Those clouds were seen by NOAA's GOES-13 satellite. The GOES-13 satellite image captured on July 29 at 14:45 UTC (10:45 a.m. EDT) shows that Dorian seems to have regained a more rounded appearance. However, the National Hurricane Center noted that the disturbance still does not appear to have a closed low-level circulation and surface pressures remain high across the area. If pressure drops, it would be a sign that the low pressure area is consolidating, but that was not occurring during the morning of July 29.

GOES satellites are managed and operated by NOAA, and the GOES image was created by NASA's GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Environmental conditions are expected to be only marginally conducive for regeneration to occur, and the National Hurricane Center gives Dorian's remnants a medium chance, about 40 percent of becoming a tropical cyclone again. The remnant low is moving to the west and is expected to move to the west-northwest in the next two days. As it continues moving it is expected to move across the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30 and 31.

Child prostitution: Raids rescue 105 young people

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Declaring child prostitution a "persistent threat" in America, the FBI said Monday that authorities had rescued 105 young people and arrested 150 alleged pimps in a three-day sweep in 76 cities.

The agency said it had been monitoring Backpage.com and other websites as a prominent online marketplace for sex for sale. Backpage.com said that it was "very, very pleased" by the raids and that if the website were shut down to the advertisements, the ads would be pushed to sites that wouldn't cooperate with law enforcement.

The young people in the roundup, almost all of them girls, ranged in age from 13 to 17.

The largest numbers of children rescued in the weekend initiative, Operation Cross Country, were in the San Francisco Bay and Detroit areas, along with Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans. The operation was conducted under the FBI's decade-long Innocence Lost National Initiative. The latest rescues and arrests were the largest such enforcement action to date.

"Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across the country," Ron Hosko, assistant director of the bureau's criminal investigative division, told a news conference. "We're trying to put this spotlight on pimps and those who would exploit."

In Operation Cross Country, federal, state and local authorities cooperated in an intelligence effort aimed at identifying pimps and their young victims.

The FBI said the campaign has resulted in rescuing 2,700 children since 2003. The investigations and convictions of 1,350 individuals have led to life imprisonment for 10 pimps and the seizure of more than $3.1 million in assets.

In their efforts to identify child victims, investigators seek help wherever they can find it ? in some cases from adult prostitutes, Hosko said. He said almost all the victims in sweeps like the one over the weekend are girls and that the profiles of the victims cut across racial lines and boundaries of wealth.

Social media are a common denominator in many of the rescues.

Last year, five members of the Underground Gangster Crips contacted teens at school or through Facebook, DateHookUp.com or other online social networking sites, enticing the girls to use their looks to earn money through prostitution.

As for websites, Liz McDougall, the general counsel for Backpage.com, said that if that site were shut down to the advertisements in question, the information that can lead to the rescues would be lost to law enforcement because the ads would be pushed to "offshore uncooperative websites."

"We feel very strongly that we're doing the right thing, and we're going to continue to do the right thing and we congratulate the FBI and everybody with the task forces involved in the program," said McDougall.

In earlier sweeps, child prostitution victims have been recovered at major sporting events ? including the NCAA Final Four and Super Bowl, Hosko said.

In the 1990s, gangs took control of street prostitution across America; that forced pimps to move girls into sporting events where security existed, said Dr. Lois Lee, founder and president of Children of the Night, a nonprofit group that has rescued 10,000 children from prostitution since 1979.

Hosko said the plight of the young people often goes unreported to authorities because the children in many instances are alienated from their families and are no longer in touch.

Pimps operate wherever vulnerable potential victims can be found. Some are being recruited right out of foster care facilities, Hosko said.

For the past decade, the FBI has been attacking the problem in partnership with a private group, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

John Ryan, the head of the center, called the problem "an escalating threat against America's children."

The Justice Department has estimated that nearly 450,000 children run away from home each year and that one-third of teens living on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.

Congress has introduced legislation that would require state law enforcement, foster care and child welfare programs to identify children lured into sex trafficking as victims of abuse and neglect eligible for protections and services.

"In much of the country today, if a girl is found in the custody of a so-called pimp she is not considered to be a victim of abuse, and that's just wrong and defies common sense," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing last month. Wyden co-sponsored the legislation with Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio.

5 Teases for Season 5 of Parenthood: A Wedding and a "Conveyor Belt of Babies"

Last year was a tough season for Parenthood, on-screen and off-screen. The show kept viewers reaching for the tissues when Kristina Braverman (Monica Potter) battled breast cancer, while her niece Amber (Mae Whitman) struggled with her feelings for a former soldier suffering from PTSD. Behind the camera, the perennial bubble show had been renewed for 15 episodes - shorter than the usual 22 - and ended its season way back in January. However, seven months later, the show has been renewed for a full 22-episode season and has been moved to one of NBC's most historically significant timeslots - Thursdays at 10/9c - putting it in the same category as great NBC dramas such as Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and ER.

"The fact that we're being put into such a premium timeslot is another indicator of [NBC's] support," showrunner Jason Katims told reporters Saturday at NBC's Television Critics Association fall previews. "We've definitely had our struggles and our frustrations along the way, but I feel so positive about it right now."

Add the new fall shows to your Watchlist

The Braverman clan will also be celebrating when the fifth season returns on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10/9c, Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Jasmine (Joy Bryant) will have welcomed their new baby and, according to new footage, there will be a wedding. So who's getting married? Get that scoop and more:

Here comes the bride: In a new trailer shown at the panel, Sarah (Lauren Graham) utters the phrase, "Let's plan your wedding." So does that mean Amber and Ryan (Matt Lauria) really are taking the plunge after they ended Season 4 looking at rings? Viewers will have to wait and see. "I think it is that crucial time where you don't know where they are going to go necessarily," Whitman said. "It's a big decision to take like that when you're young. ... It's a huge choice so I'd be interested to see how they tackle that." But even though there may be talk of a wedding, it sounds like their romance may still hit some turbulence. "They're obviously very passionate about each other," Whitman said. "It's just interesting to see, as different questions come up in a relationship when you're an adult and it's more serious, how they continue to balance each other out and how they both grow as adults and if they will grow together or separately." So how will her large family react to the news? Uncle Crosby, aka Shepard, gave her his blessing. "Abs like that come along once in a lifetime," he quipped.

Sarah is moving on up... to her own pad: Now that her daughter (might be) contemplating marriage and her son is going off to college, Sarah will be suffering from empty nest syndrome. "This is a character who struggles to find some consistent either employment or relationship, but I think she's doing better and we're going to have an opportunity to tell the story of, 'OK, when your kids are gone, what is your relationship like?" Graham said. "Now we begin the process of becoming peers," she said of Sarah's relationships with Amber and Drew (Miles Heizer). Thankfully, having an empty nest will give Sarah lots of time to focus on herself. "Sarah spent so much of her energy last season going between Hank and Mark," Katims said. "This is a year of her wanting to figure out her life and ... not be focused solely on a relationship." First things first: She finally has her own place! "I think there's been a lot of progress. I have an apartment. I have a bed," Graham said. "In order to live there more cheaply, I'm the super, which is fun because I will interact with a lot of tenants."

The Luncheonette and more TV businesses we want to invest in

Oh, baby: To reflect real life, the show will jump ahead nearly nine months from where Season 4 left off, which means Jasmine and Crosby are parents to a new baby. Unlike many actors, Shepard said he's been enjoying acting with the "conveyor belt of babies," as he called it, now that he is a new dad himself. "Now I love babies and I'm supposed to be frustrated with the crying babies in the scene and I'm like, 'Oh my God, look at this little stinker,'" Shepard said. "I got a software upgrade and I love it." Shepard's on-screen wife, Bryant, is now also benefiting from her co-star's recent attitude change. "It definitely helps me because I don't have kids, so he's telling me how to hold the baby," she said.

New problems for Joel and Julia: Just as the couple closed the book on their issues with Victor at the end of last season, there will be a few new curveballs coming their way. "There's major role reversal in the fact that these construction opportunities are suddenly coming his way and we're going to see that," Sam Jaeger said. Added Erika Christensen: "Julia is still unemployed and not happy about it."

Adam and Kristina's struggle isn't over just yet: Katims and the cast were less clear about what will be next for Adam (Peter Krause) and Kristina after she was deemed cancer-free at the end of last season. But it sounds like her struggle last year will still play a big role in their future. "With Adam and Kristina, the fact that they've just been through a season like they just went through, how would somebody react to that?" Katim asked. "With Adam and Kristina, it's about what they've just been through that will inform what their next season is."

Parenthood returns on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10/9c on NBC.

Sleek Eyewear Reimagines A More Stylish Google Glass [Pics]

Sourcebits?is a software development firm that felt the current design for Google Glass was too geeky even for them. So they decided to put together a team of?designers, illustrators, and 3D modelers to create a more fashion-friendly version of the glasses.

Looking more like something you could work into an existing wardrobe, the team have made a few significant changes.

The first was to redistribute the weight of the glasses. Instead of having all the technology focused on one side which made the frames bulky ? they divided it up across both sides, allowing for a much thinner product.

google-glasses-sourcebits-4

A dual touchpad system has also been incorporated into their design, meaning their version of Google Glass would be accessible to both right- and left-handed users.

Showing that the technology has more appeal than just those in the tech crowd, the redesign will come as a welcome sight to those who were worried about sacrificing their image for the sake of Google Glass.

Downton Abbey: The Aftermath

Image

Mary Crawley sat up in her hospital bed, gently cradling her newborn son. He was on the verge of crying, so she softly hummed a light tune in hopes of calming him down. Matthew had left about two hours ago, leaving Mary alone in this hospital bed. Her long brown hair was delicately put into the same updo it usually was. A few strands fell down on her face. Her bright brown eyes looked up from the face of her son and she saw her parents quickly walking towards her. A smile began to form on her lips but it quickly fell as they came closer. Something was wrong. ?What? What is it?? She quickly asked. Her mother sat on her bed, carefully taking the baby from Mary?s arms, gripping Mary?s hand tightly. ?Mary,? her father started, ?Matthew?s been in an accident.? Mary froze. ?Mary, I?m sorry,? her mother said, tears forming in her eyes. They didn?t need to say more. ?I? can?t breathe,? Mary grasped her chest. Nurses ran over trying to calm her and steady her breathing. Eventually they were successful.

Mary and her son, who was born a few weeks early, remained in the hospital for several days. Her mother and a valet came to pick her up from the hospital and take her to the Abbey. Her mother helped her to the car; Mary was clinging onto her son, the only remaining piece of Matthew that remained. After much heartache, she had decided to name her son George.

It had been a week since her return to Downton and she had not left her room, except for Matthew?s funeral. It took all of her energy to attend the funeral and not collapse by his grave. It may not have been his job, but Carson had continuously brought her food and Mary frequently found herself crying into his arms. If Carson had not stayed with her to ensure that she ate, Mary would have rejected the food.
Mary sat in front of her vanity, brushing her hair before braiding it over her shoulder. She had dark circles under her eyes. Anna came in to help her get dressed in one of her many black dresses. When Mary was required to wear black dresses for mourning before this incident, she never felt truly sad. But now, the black perfectly mimicked what she felt inside. Anna hugged Mary, a human touch that Mary deeply appreciated. Mary picked up George, his crisp white blanket contrasting with her black dress. He had yet to know heartbreak. Mary opened the door and stepped outside. She felt unsafe but continued. She heard voices from the sitting room and made her way towards them.

?You are strong. A storm-braver if I ever saw one.?

Matthew?s words gave her strength as she made her way closer to the room.

Miller rescues South Africa

South Africa welcomed their first ODI victory over Sri Lanka - in Sri Lanka - in more than 19 years on Friday, reducing the series deficit to two-one thanks largely to batsman David Miller's cavalier 85 not out and seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe's four key breakthroughs.

After Miller had smashed an unbeaten 85 off 72 balls to give the tourists something to bowl at, Tsotsobe ripped the Sri Lankan top order apart, recording figures of four for 22 as the Proteas bowled their hosts out for just 167 to win the third ODI in Pallekele by 56 runs.

Only Thisara Perera, who blasted Robin Peterson for five sixes and a four off the 33rd over, provided any real resistance, but he could not prevent South Africa from reducing their deficit to 2-1 with 40 balls to spare.

Skipper AB de Villiers opted to bat after winning the toss but his side got off to a dreadful start as they slumped to 53 for three, Lasith Malinga accounting for Alviro Petersen and Perera dismissing both Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy inside the first 16 overs.

De Villiers' 47 helped to steady the ship before he was caught behind off Ajantha Mendis, the first of his three wickets for 35 runs, but it was then that Miller took up the challenge.

The 24-year-old smashed five sixes and four fours, scoring 35 off the last 10 balls as South Africa ended their innings on 223 for seven.

Sri Lanka's reply got off to a shaky start when opener Tillakaratne Dilshan spooned a mis-timed drive off Tsotsobe to de Villiers at extra cover and departed for six with just 14 on the board.

They slipped to 14 for two three balls later when Kumar Sangakkara went for a duck, Duminy taking the catch in the covers to hand Tsotsobe his second wicket of the over.

Upul Tharanga's involvement ended with only two more having been added when he edged Tsotsobe to first slip, and it took a dogged stand between Mahela Jayawardene and Dinesh Chandimal to put the Sri Lankans back on track.

However, Peterson broke the 55-run partnership when he clean bowled Jayawardene for 24 with an arm ball, and when Ryan McLaren nicked Chandimal to wicketkeeper De Kock on 29 and Angelo Perera and Angelo Matthews soon followed, Sri Lanka were reduced to 93 for seven.

But Perera gave his side hope with a brutal assault, hitting Petersen for five sixes and a four from the 33rd over, which also included a wide, to take the score to 129 for seven.

While he remained at the wicket Sri Lanka had a fighting chance, but once he had holed out to Faf du Plessis for 65 off Farhaan Behardian (three for 19), the writing was on the wall and Malinga and Mendis failed to delay the inevitable.

New lake at North Pole? More of a pond, really

Is the buzz warranted over a new "lake" at the North Pole thanks to global warming? Mostly no. But the Arctic ice is melting.

The online buzz over a new "lake" on the North Pole as the latest symbol of global warming is mostly hype.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Yes, there is a new foot-deep body of water in the Arctic. But this isn't unusual. This is another Arctic pond caused by seasonal (summer) warming. And the camera lens distorts the size.

"I have seen much more extensive ponding," James Morison, the principal investigator for the North Pole Environmental Observatory told The Atlantic. "Because we use wide angle lenses the melt pond looks much bigger than it is."

Note the use of the word "pond" to describe this body of water.

The Atlantic goes on to note that last summer's Arctic ice melt was one of the worst, and this year's hasn't been as bad, so far. The now-famous pond was the result of an early July heat wave.

"While the rate of Arctic sea ice loss is normally fastest during July, the warmest month of the year, ice loss was even faster than usual over the first two weeks of July 2013," according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. "Compared to the 1981 to 2010 average, ice extent on July 15, 2013 was 1.06 million square kilometers (409,000 square miles) below average."

Still, global warming is taking a toll on the Arctic, say most scientists. As the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration 2012 Arctic Report Card states: "Large changes in multiple indicators are affecting climate and ecosystems, and, combined, these changes provide strong evidence of the momentum that has developed in the Arctic environmental system due to the impacts of a persistent warming trend that began over 30 years ago."

And as The Christian Science Monitor noted this week, it's not the creation of Arctic ponds that's worrying ? it's the release of methane gas. The release of Arctic methane gas due to warming trends is an "economic time bomb," which could cost the world $60 trillion. Yes, that's trillion ? the equivalent of the world's entire economic output in 2012.

"The Arctic ice stores roughly 50 billion tons of methane, a concentrated gas some 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Over the past few years, scientists have observed the gas pluming from the region?s thawing ice. That raised the question: even as profits are hauled in from shipping and drilling in the Arctic, could that methane gas be waiting to undo all those gains? Could the toll of that released gas far outweigh the rewards of melting Arctic?s ice?"

Church leaders urge strong commitment to peace from Israel and Palestine

AP

A Palestinian man looks out over buildings in the Rafah refugee camp destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, southern Gaza Strip.

Israel and Palestine must make every effort to resume talks on a negotiated settlement, leaders in the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church have said.

The call came in a joint statement from the Church of England's lead bishop on the Middle East peace process, Bishop Michael Langrish, and the Roman Catholic Church's spokesman on international affairs, Bishop Declan Lang.

US Secretary of State John Kerry announced last week that Israeli and Palestinian leaders had reached an agreement establishing a basis for the resumption of peace talks.

The bishops appealed to both sides of the conflict to take full advantage of the opportunity for fresh talks and "refrain from actions that might see this chance lost".

"This conflict has for far too long been an open wound that has frustrated the hopes and aspirations of both communities to live in dignity, peace and security," they said.

"Now is the time to escape the prism of pain and fear through which Christian, Jew and Muslim see each other in the Holy Land."

They added: "The prospect for securing a negotiated resolution has never looked so daunting but neither has it been so necessary. The cost of failure is too unbearable to imagine."

Joe Greene is a parishioner at St. Bernadette Parish.

He has been working every day since the 4th to repair plumbing damaged during this month's flooding.

"Getting everything back to new again with that bad weather this 4th of July," he said.

The church is having to replace everything the flood waters touched.
"Even the dry wall, the walls through the entire church had to be cut out 3-to-4 feet high and in the Childhood Development Academy," said Father Paul Smith.

Crews have been out here everyday and do not expect to complete the work for another month.

"Between the church and the academy it's gonna be pushing almost a million dollars worth of damage between the structures themselves and the contents," said Smith.

Between FEMA funding and the church's insurance policy most of the costs are covered, but the church is on their own paying for renovations and improvements to prevent future flooding.

"A lot of that stuff insurance won't cover," Smith said.

And there are some things, like the storm water drainage ditches, they cannot control.

"The city just re-dug these ditches, all the way from pier park to here," said Smith. "Water used to flow pretty nicely through the drainage ditches. Now they don't flow at all."

They have contacted local officials about fixing the ditch issue.

A watershed moment in my lifetime of treating cancer patients

I have had patients and their families do strange things during a consultation.?? Patients taking notes and recording what the doctor says are pretty commonplace these days, as are answering a cell phone and arguing with a spouse over what really happened while giving a history.

Some patients go to great lengths to disconnect from the process, filing their nails, or flipping through a magazine.?? I?ve watched babies? diapers being changed, snacks being eaten and business conducted by text messaging.? I have probably encouraged this informality?I have a consultation room furnished with a comfortable couch and chairs, with soft lighting.? I think it?s nice for patients to meet their doctor and nurse for the first time with their clothes on, as if they were home in the family room.

I thought I had seen everything, but I learned yesterday that I had not, because yesterday, for the first time in my career, a patient fell asleep during our initial consultation.

Now I am not saying that I give the most interesting speeches on the planet about the risks, benefits, alternatives and side effects of radiation therapy.? In fact?a little confession here?I have given the spiels about the various treatments of prostate cancer and breast cancer so many times, that occasionally, just rarely, after an afternoon meal during the dog days of summer I have found myself drifting off midsentence and righting myself with a jerk.? Not very subtle, I know, but forgivable, especially during the early sleepless nights of motherhood combined with career. No one has ever actually complained that I fell asleep during the consultation, so I suspect that my heavy nodding head and half closed eyes were taken as a Yoda like signs of wisdom and empathy rather than tactless boredom.? At least I hope so!

So yesterday was a watershed moment in my lifetime of treating cancer patients.? A middle aged woman, otherwise in excellent health, had been given the diagnosis of breast cancer after a routine screening mammogram.? She underwent a lumpectomy and was found to have ductal carcinoma in situ, the earliest detectable form of breast cancer, stage 0.? She was referred to me for consideration of postoperative radiation therapy, and was seeing me for the first time with her husband accompanying her.? She was lucky?her cancer was detected so early that the likelihood of relapse was low, no matter what treatment she chose.

As I launched into my time worn discussion of her good prognosis, and the finer points of radiation therapy, she suddenly interrupted me, saying, ?I just got back in the pool and swam for the first time since my surgery.? I love to swim.? It?s great exercise, but now I am really tired. Do you mind if I lie down on the couch here??

There are many reasons why I am not a psychiatrist but generally speaking, I am okay with couches.? I said, ?Sure!? and continued to talk.? As I neared the topic of CT scan based treatment planning, to avoid treating her heart and left lung, I noticed that her eyes were closed.? A few minutes later, a slight snore escaped her lips. Her husband sat at rapt attention, but my patient was out like a light!

I am choosing to take this as a sign that she was very, very comfortable with me.? But in the meantime, I think it might be time to spruce up my dog and pony show, for sure.

Miranda Fielding is a radiation oncologist who blogs at?The Crab Diaries.

Archaeologists find duck-billed dinosaur tail in desert in northern Mexico

Updated July 23, 2013 12:34:29

Palaeontologists have discovered the fossilised remains of a 72-million-year-old dinosaur tail in a desert in northern Mexico.

Apart from being unusually well preserved, the five-metre tail was the first ever found in Mexico, National Institute for Anthropology and History (INAH) director Francisco Aguilar said in the border state of Coahuila.

The dig team, made up of palaeontologists and students from INAH and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), identified the fossil as a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur.

The tail, found near the small town of General Cepeda, likely made up half the dinosaur's length, Mr Aguilar said.

Palaeontologists found the 50 vertebrae of the tail completely intact after spending 20 days in the desert slowly lifting a sedimentary rock covering the creature's bones.

Strewn around the tail were other fossilised bones, including one of the dinosaur's hips, INAH said.

Dinosaur tail finds are relatively rare, according to INAH.

The new discovery could further the understanding of the hadrosaur family and aid research on diseases that afflicted dinosaur bones, which resembled those of humans, Mr Aguilar said.

Scientists have already determined that dinosaurs suffered from tumours and arthritis, for example.

Dinosaur remains have been found in many parts of the state of Coahuila, in addition to Mexico's other northern desert states.

"We have a very rich history of palaeontology," Mr Aguilar said.

He noted that during the Cretaceous period, which ended about 65 million years ago, much of what is now central northern Mexico was on the coast.

This has enabled researchers to unearth remains of both marine and land-based dinosaurs.

The presence of the remains was reported to INAH by locals in June 2012 and after initial inspections, excavation began earlier this month.

The remains of the tail will be transferred to General Cepeda for cleaning and further investigation.

Hawaii Smoking Ban Stops Smokers From Lighting Up At Oahu Beaches, Other Spots

HONOLULU ? Smoking at beaches, parks and bus stops on Oahu will be prohibited next year.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed two bills Sunday at Waikiki Beach that ban smoking starting Jan. 1 at bus stops and parks, including beaches, playgrounds, swimming pools and athletic fields.

Before the bans take effect on Jan. 1, city officials will be posting signs and informing residents and tourists.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the bills were initially scheduled to take effect when the mayor signed them but more time was needed for public education.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources enforces rules from the high water mark to the water's edge. But the department has given the city permission to enforce the rules in the water at Kuhio Beach Park.

Iran invites Western leaders to inauguration

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's foreign ministry says the Islamic Republic has sent invitations to all the world's leaders to attend the Aug. 4 inauguration of its new president.

Spokesman Abbas Araghchi was quoted by the semiofficial ISNA news agency as saying Sunday that American and European leaders and officials were among those invited to the swearing-in of Hasan Rouhani.

Rouhani has pledged to follow a "path of moderation" and promised greater openness over the country's nuclear program, which has placed it at odds with the West.

Araghchi did not elaborate as to which individual leaders would be invited. Officials in Israel, which the Islamic Republic does not recognize, would presumably not be included.

Rouhani won a landslide victory in June 14 presidential elections. He replaces Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, first elected in 2005.

Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center to shut its doors

Posted on: 2:39 pm, July 22, 2013, by Katie DeLong and Jenna Sachs, updated on: 07:27pm, July 22, 2013

animal rescue center

GREENFIELD (WITI) ? The Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Greenfield on Monday, July 22nd announced via its Facebook page that the center will be shutting down.

On its Facebook page Monday, the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center posted the following message:

?Over the last several months, the?Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center?has been reviewing itself for sustainability. While we wish circumstances were different, we have made the decision to cease operations. We are very grateful for your support?and encouragement. Our immediate focus is on matching the animals in our program with permanent families and preparing the property for sale. We will post updates on our progress and appreciate any and all networking for the animals in our care! We remain fully committed to their care and appropriate placement. NONE of the animals are at risk for euthanasia and we will not compromise our adoption standards ? we will seek the best possible placements for each of the animals in our care! Thank you in advance for your understanding and compassion. This process was not entered into lightly and we researched all possible alternatives.?

The center stopped taking in new animals earlier this month, and there are 27 animals left to be adopted, the majority of which are cats.

Adoption fees are now cut in half, from $100 to $50.

?In an ideal world, the animals here would be placed by July 31st. That may not be realistic. We`ll just have to see what happens,??Amy Rowell, the center?s owner said.

Daniel, a 26-toed cat, became the mascot for the center ? helping the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center to raise money to build a new facility, after its lease at Southridge Mall was not renewed.

In April of 2012, the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center moved to a new facility on Loomis, near 51st Street.

The center received donations for its new facility from across the country, and even received donations from places like Greece and Quebec.

Daniel?s extra toes, two extra per paw, inspired thousands to write $26 checks to help the center relocate.

Rowell said they center needed to raise $100,000 for a down payment on the new facility and then pay off the remaining balance of $110,000.

?I?m really proud of the work we?re done in the last eight years. This is definitely not a failure. This is just us being realistic about a business. The property expenses are huge, and it?s not to say we were naive in going into this adventure of thinking we would somehow be able to overcome that, but the obstacles are just too large to overcome,? Rowell said Monday.

Over 130 people responded to the center?s Facebook post announcing its closure on Monday.

One woman wrote: ?I want to thank the center for giving me my best friend in the whole world.?

?That?s a legacy that we?re really proud to leave behind,? Rowell said.
